Culture Club: License to Rave

Do you like to pump the jams when you're in the car? Perhaps people outside of your car can even hear it? Yeah, you must really love your music - you're willing to play it proudly for the whole world to hear. But step aside, friend, because compared to your noise pollution these drivers literally have a license to rave. Some more seriously cool EDM themed license plates under the cut

Culture Club: Musically Oblivious 8th Grader

My favorite new internet meme is "Musically Oblivious 8th Grader," which exploits the humor of musical elitism. I find that the longer you work in the music industry, the harder it becomes to not accidentally lapse into a 'bitter, judgmental music snob' - especially when you meet someone who doesn't know the difference between Acid and their asshole. These memes help remind me not to take all the obliviousness so seriously! Enjoy some of my favorites:

House Music? No thanks, I live in an apartment

Spotlight: I'm A House Gangster

"I am a House Gangster" - You've probably heard the phrase sampled in a bumpin' house track. Or maybe you've read it on the tee-shirt of your favorite DJ. Let's face it, you probably even have a house-head friend that that self-identifies as such. "I'm a House Gangster" is a concept that was coined four years ago by DJ Sneak and has since become a reoccurring phrase used inside the House-Head community to describe one's dedication to the genre. In a recent interview, DJ Sneak gave us some insight into the birth of and idea behind "I'm a House Gangster"

Girls Gone Vinyl : A Documentary

Hey DJane, need some chicken soup for your soul? Well a couple of awesome female DJs are in the process of making a film about female DJs in a male dominated industry. No one would think that the electronic music industry is in conflict, but the truth is that the DJ world is even more sexually biased than the world of politicians or business executives.

"Girls Gone Vinyl" is the world's first documentary about female DJs, their struggles, their successes, what inspires them, and what drives them - in spite of overwhelming odds. Watch these women converge on Detroit for the largest electronic music festival in North America and hear their stories firsthand.

Interview: J. Phlip

J Phlip (pronounced J Flip) discovered House Music in her hometown of Champaign, Illinois, just 2 hours south of Chicago. Around her 19th birthday, she got her first DJ equipment - two turntables and a mixer belt without EQ buttons - for $100! Her poor roommates were forced to listen to the dance music that she played between studying for her electrical engineering degree. There aren't many 4.0 engineering majors who choose to become a DJs, but J Phlip really loves music and has dedicated her life to it.

J Phlip is now a well known DJ / producer in San Francisco. She is known far and wide for her fun mix of house, tech house, deep house, techno, booty-bass and virtually everything that makes you shake your ass. Her skills on the decks and in the studio got her a very desirable spot as an official member of the dirtybird crew. J Phlip continues to release new tracks from the dirtybird label, where she signed an exclusive home. She has played concerts at incredibly high profile as Fabric, Space Ibiza and Back to Basics. She was also chosen for URB Magazine's Next 100 in 2009. In the spring of 2010, Jessica moved to Berlin to explore the European EDM scene.

I sat down with J Phlip recently before her gig in San Francisco to ask her a few questions about how she integrates her music & style:

Spotlight: JojoElectro.com

I am always on the lookout for cheeky ways to proclaim my affinity for fat beats. Knowing this, a good colleague introduced me to JoJoElectro.com and I'm glad he did: JoJo Electro is a brand of apparel inspired the international electronic dance music scene. (Sound like someone else you know?) Jojo Electro also collaborates with headliners such as DJ Dan, Charles Feelgood, Frankie Bones and with industry giants such as Traxsource and In-Stereo recordings to create some really unique merchandise.

I was able to get a few moments with Mike Mattarocci, the founder of JoJoElectro, for some questions:
